5 thoughts on First Day of School

It's the beginning of the school year and I am SO EXCITED for several reasons:

  • We are so luckey to be in a profession where we always get a new beginning. ....and every year we get better, stronger, faster! (a small allusion to the lovely  Summer Olympics..)
  • There is so much great stuff coming our way this year!
  • I get to work with the amazing EIPS teachers again.

Despite my excitement, I do realize that we are at the beginning of the school year and so time is commodity. So, without further ado, here are some of my Beginning-of-The-Year musings:

  1.  As I start the school year, I like to revisit Richard Allington's work on reading. He lists the elements for great literacy teaching. Simple. Proven. Cheap.

2. I'm always searching for activities for the nerve-wracking First Day of School. I enjoyed reading these posts and you may as well....

3. The Read Aloud. This is kind of an extension of the Allington quote....but I don't think the reading aloud of a novel, story, newspaper article to a class can be emphasized enough as an awesome  First Day of School activity... and and an activity for every day after that! Here are some Read Aloud Resources/Suggestions  you may find useful:

4. For a little inspriation, I always love watching (and re-watching) these Twelve Must Watch TED Talks for Teachers.

5. And finally, I think about literacy goals for our students...and I wonder Could a Literacy Goal be this Simple?

I wish you all a great Back-to-School and look forward to working with you this year! Please don't hesitate to drop me a line!

What do you think about and/or plan for as the first day of school approaches?

Cheers,
Janice
